I don't know how to make pictures smaller. So I pulled a
picture up from my desktop and tried to crop it. A
blank image was left where I cropped. How do I restore?

Unfortunately you can't.
When you crop, you need to save the crop as a new file. Then, when closing
your original file you are asked to "save the change" you answer NO.
It is always a bad idea to edit an original file. Instead, make a copy of
the original file and edit the copy. To male a copy you simply right click
on the file, click on Copy on the opening menu and then hold the Ctrl key
down and press the letter V. This will add a file in your folder with the
words "Copy of" in front of the original file name. You then edit Copy of.
If you make a mistake, you still have your original file.
If you recently took this picture with a digital camera, you may be able to
recover it from your memory card even if you delete it or reformatted the
card. Try the free software here:
Make a new folder on your C drive.

Name it Recovery

Go to this site:

http://www.foto-erhardt.de/modules.php?name=Downloads

Download the free file: Digital Image Recovery in your Recovery folder.

The file will be Digital Image Recovery.zip

Once in your folder you need to "unzip" or "extract" this .zip file.

When you unzip or extract this .zip file select your Recovery folder for the
destination.

You will now have the file: 32fsu21.exe in this folder.

Double click on it to install the software.

Once installed you can change the language from German to English when the
software start.

Follow the directions on your screen after you start this software, very
easy to use and very good. You only need to connect your camera with the
card, open My Computer and look under Storage with removable drive. There
should be a drive letter (E,F,G or H)for your camera. You select this letter
when the software opens to scan a drive for recovery.

Maybe you never used a zip/unzip software. If so post again and I will find
a free one for you or just use google to find one.

Several available.

Also, I am not sure what you have in mind about making "picture smaller". Do
you mean you want to have a smaller file size of the same picture for
e-mailing or uploading to a web site. This is different than cropping
(cropping is removing specific areas of the photo). If a smaller file size
is what you want:

.. To decrease the size of the file for e-mail, web publishing etc.

Go to this site and download the free Image Resizer. Exe file in one of your
folder.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Once in your folder, double click on it to install it.

Once installed, you right click on a photo file (or on a group of selected
photo files).

Click on Resize image on the opening menu.

A window will open, select the size you want.

New files will be added in your folder, same name as original file but with
the word (small) added.

The first time you use it, you may not see Resize image on the opening menu
after you right click on the file or if you see it, it may not work. If so,
do the following:

Click on Run, click on Start and type the following in the textbox:

REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL

and press the Enter key.

Note that there is a space between ...32 and SHI.

Also, you can download a free batch converter from here to resize pictures
and edit photos:

This software is also very good for cropping.
