I am looking for a more complete solution than System Restore. Apparently
it will not remove all the vestiges of a bad software installation.
Comments please on plus and minus of RestoreIt, Go Back, or other
suggestions / recommendations.

I've used GoBack since Windows 98. Even on a 500MHZ. PIII the performance
hit was minimal. It has pulled my fat out of the fire on a few occasions.

One thing I will say is that the restore history is disappointing on a
Windows XP computer compared to a Windows 98 machine. (unless since
acquiring the product Symantec has made changes to GoBack's 4GB restore
buffer limit.) On my old Windows 98 computer I get in the neighborhood of
three weeks of available restore history. On my current computer (XP Pro) it
is limited to 5 or 6 days at most. I attribute this to the increased
overheard with the NTFS files system in disk writes, logging etc. (indexing
is off)

Even with the above mentioned limitation it's still more than sufficient to
get you back up and running in the event of software related problems that
prevent Windows from operating properly. Recovering from a bad install that
prevents your computer from booting, or the like, takes just slightly longer
than a cold reboot. A good product IMHO.

None of these products BTW are of any use in the event of a physical drive
failure. A complete system backup is still in order.

I used Go Back on 98 and agree with the other poster that it was an
invaluable tool. However,on this XP system it is the kiss of death.
It slows performance by about 25%--makes the windows repair facility
inoperable and I believe it has several other conflicts with XP.

FWIW I've been running GoBack (Roxio version 3.11.59) on XP Pro since it
(XP) came out and have experienced no problems.

I let System Restore run as well, since drive space is not an issue, and
have had no conflicts. (and would expect none as System Restore is dormant
except during the few seconds it takes to create a restore point)
Performance wise I can see no difference on a 2.4GHZ. P4 with 512MB. RAM.

The only drawback I've experienced is the one I mentioned, the shorter
restore history. I'm presently able to "Go Back" only 6 days. On the plus
side with XPs' increased stability compared to 9x I've rarely had to use it.

Just an FYI in case you wanted to look into it further.
