If the restore points are available...
it may work in Safe Mode.

Try using system restore from safe mode. When you say 'I tried to go back to
a restore point it would not go back.' Did system restore go through the
procedure of restoring the system and then, on rebooting, an error message
appeared to say that system restore could not restore the system? If this is
the case the system restore point(s) you are using may be corrupt, in which
case you will not be able to restore the system back to that particular
point in time. Do check safe mode first though before writing the system
restore point off as corrupt.

For a bit of background, sometimes AV or other 3rd-party protection tools
will prevent System Restore from working in "online" mode. That's why the
"offline" method is advised.

That's useful information Jill, Thanks. However, I personally don't use
system restore, it is always turned off. I much prefer to have an up to date
imaged copy of my hard drive. I suppose it all stemmed back to the original
vista beta when I tired to restore my system using system restore, only to
find that all 5 restore points were corrupt. I've never trusted system
restore since. Then, of course there is the problem of dual booting XP and
Vista whereby you loose restore points simply by opening XP. Fortunately I
use VMware virtual machine now so, even if I did have system restore
enabled, I wouldn't have the same problem of losing restore points when
moving form one operating system to another.
