restore xp to usable state

I'm trying to restore xp to a usable state and the restore
points available do nothing. I want to go back possibly a
month when system was ok. anyone have any ideas?
 
If onr or more restore points have been corrupted - typically the result of
a virus - then all restore points are unusable and you cannot restore your
computer to an earlier time. In this case, all you can do is to turn off
system restore on all drives and reboot. This will delete all restore
points. After your computer has restarted turn on system restore and create
a restore point.

that clears the recent restore points, but doesn't let me
go back about a month when the system was stable. So what
is the story is it possible or not?
