I backed up some lotus files with windows 98 and it
created a qic file. Would like to restore the data using
XP home. How is this accomplished?

You can't AFAIK - there may be some third-party utility to do this, but
otherwise the XP (NT) Backup will not read W98 backup files.

I do have to say that Microsoft have really dropped a bollock here, not
making XP Backup able to read W9x backups......

Try the utility here for that, it has a 30 day free trail. Link courtesy of

Ntbackup will not recognize the file compression used by Win98's msbackup.

Download the 30 day trial of Backup MyPC from www.stompinc.com will work.
Backup MyPC is actually the Veritas Backup Exec
app that the Windows Backup programs are based on so it will open and
restore .QIC files.

Thats correct, XP backup will only understand the .bak extension similar to
NT/2k and not the .qic extension.

that's a dropped bollock by MS then isn't it, as they are pushing to a
common platform, surely they should have thought about people with Win 9x
backup files?

Greetings --

If you've used Win9x's native backup utility to create *.qic
files, I'm afraid you'll need to restore those files on a Win98
machine prior to transfer to the WinXP machine. As they've always
been since the days of Win95 and WinNT, the two back up file formats
are completely incompatible. Another possible solution would be to
purchase a 3rd party backup utility that can read and convert the *qic
file format; I've heard that Veritas makes such a product.

WinNT_2K Backup Does Not Recognize Win9x Backup Files
http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q155979

Remember, WinXP is descended from WinNT and Win2K, and it
completely unrelated to Win9x/Me.
