Restore problem

I am using Windows Media Centre (a super-set of WinXP Pro)

Too frequently when restarting, the PC stops at the Windows XP screen (with
the 3 balls chasing across).
If I restart it and choose 'revert to previous working configuration' it
still stops at the same point.
Even by choosing Restore I have to go back 5 days to find a working restore
point - even tho' the PC has rebooted OK since then!

Having got it rebooting it seems almost whatever I do - removing a program,
removing unsused icons or letting an auto update take place, if I reboot it
again then it stops at the same place.

So this is possibly 3 seperate problems
1) Why would 'revert to last working config' not make it start OK?
2) Why do I have to Restore back so many days (past where it has booted OK)?
3) Why, so it seems, does any modification cause it to fail to boot?

I would be very grateful for any help

Thanks
Nigel

I now have the situation that if I can find a restore point that wortks. If
I immediately reboot, the PC will stop again at the same point (Windows XP
screen with moving balls).
So I don't understand what is happening in that short time.

1) Why would 'revert to last working config' not make it start OK?
A : Its probably a hardware or a driver issue so the last know config would
not work - last good is only reset back to the last time you where able to
login to windows.
2) Why do I have to Restore back so many days (past where it has booted
A: Is it possable that new software was installed or updated ion the system
ex: auto updates - If not treat it as a hardware driver issue and
troublesoot it that way.

OK)?
3) Why, so it seems, does any modification cause it to fail to boot?
I would troubleshoot this in selective start up and check the hardware
compatabilty list (HCL) for known issues. Also check the driver versions and
compare them to the manufactorer recomended. MS alot of times has driver
that are signed and will work fine.
