Restore problem

I wish to return to a an earlier date. Several possible dates show
prominently, however, after restart proceedure complete it tells me that it
is unable to restore
to that date.

Yes - unfortunately, it sounds lke something has gotten corrupted in your
restoration points. As far as I know - all you can do is turn off system
restore, reboot, turn it back on and create a manual restoration point. You
will lose all previous restoration points - but not like they work now
anyway.
