Why would I need to restore to a previous restore point if I still have to
go into control panel and uninstall the latest hotfix theat I installed?
Wouldn't the uninstall restore the previous files and settings. I'm getting
too many BSOD's so won't be installing any more hot fixes.

You have an underlying problem. It's not the hotfixes causing your BSOD's.

Download & run ALL the below:
Ad-Aware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Spybot - Search & Destroy by Patrick Kolla - http://security.kolla.de/
NOTE: After you install the above, click "Online" and get the latest updates for the database.

Next, do a system file check. (Have your Windows CD handy)
Reboot, press F8 after the BIOS post, select "Safe Mode with Command Prompt", at the prompt,
type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Follow the prompts, reboot.

http://www.cexx.org/vx2.htm According to the site Search & Destroy would pick this up anyway.

I got an error:

Currently running scan in normal/enhanced mode.

As to your problem, if the normal mode scan fails, your best option is an In-Place Upgrade...

Ok one shortcut in my quick launch caused 3 or 4 BSOD's after I read this
and tried the sfc program. I deleted and recreated the short-cut. Now to see
if there is anything else causing the problem.

Haven't found anything - it's even worse that it's intermittant. Yesterday I
had only jused logged on then got BSOD straight away.
