I have done a full backup on an external hard drive. I have reinstalled
window XP and I am ready to restore files back to my computer. For instance,
do I need to reinstall MS Office, then restore files or will the program be
transfered during restore?

I used the internal backup program in windows.

Then it depends on how and what you backed up. If you backed up the system
state and all files it will probably work. You may have to do a bit of
tweaking but usually it isn't required. In the future I recommend using the
Automated System Restore if you are using ntbackup. It automates the process
somewhat.

OK, then since you've reinstalled Windows you'll need to also get
all your applications back on the new instance. When you say the
restoration, you do mean retrieving personal data, such as My Docs
IE Favorites. What I mean is you don't expect to simply run a full
restoration of the .Bkf and have your original machine state restored.

That's precisely what ntbackup will restore (original machine state) if it
was a full backup including system state.

It was hard to tell from how the OP phrased his question. But
you are correct on the recovery if that's how he did the backup.

Hi,

I saw a thread from 12/18 you were in on and have a similar question:

I always backed up my previous laptop running XP pro on a dedicated external
drive. 1st a full backup, then incrementals, after always selecting the whole
c drive. Now I need to go back into that computer and restore the data in
some accounting software for my home business that saves the Pervasive
database files in the folders for each company (you can run multiple
companies) in labeled folders (it's not hidden elsewhere). Every time I try
to select and restore those files, either the system hangs while trying to
create a restore point, or I get a warning that the file is not found or
doesn't exist. Hard to believe, since I always use the verify option, and
every .bkf incremental backup that was addded to the existing backups (I
select that option in advanced), and all can be found using explorer on that
drive, and it was only used with that computer. I've wasted all day trying to
get the data reset to anytime since my last work in that program in April of
'04 and when I made some irreversible errors this morning. Any help would be
greatly appreciated....
