Restore disk not working

I just tried to use the restore disk to wipe everything off my system and
start again but although I've followed the instructions letter for letter
quite a few times my computer either isn't reading the disk or just not
responding to it.

Any idea how to fix this?

More info - how is it not responding, when, any error messages - how are you
trying to run restore and so forth.

Basically I'm just doing what it says in the manual to do. Turning on the
computer and inserting the disk before the computer boots up. It says it
should present me with a message asking what I wish to do but it just loads
up normally.

If you insert the disk after you've switched the power on, that is normally
too late. You would have to then power down and restart with the CD
already in, then watch the screen for messages.

However, if your system's boot sequence puts the CD after the hard disk, it
will ignore it. Go into teh BIOS and be sure the CD precedes the hard
disk.
