My system crashed and all the software had to be reloaded. I do not have a
recent backup for my outlook contacts. What file should I copy from my old
data into the new folders in order to restore access my outlook 2000 contacts?

I was able to find a mailbox.pst in the files from my old system, but it
seemed to be from the Windows directory, not from the Documents and Settings
directory.

I searched the C: drive for *.pst and *.pab and *.ost and found no new
files. I added three new names to the outlook contact folder, and then
searched for files with that time and date stamp and found nohting that
seemed to be my current Outlook file, so I was not able to rename it .old and
substitute the orignal file or point it to a new directory.

I read all three of your instructions, but was not able to identify where
Outlook 2000 is putting the current information, so I was not able to
substitute the old file (assuming I even found the correct file).

I do have my system set to display hidden files and folders.

The file you need is your Personal Folders file (*.pst) It's where all the
mail, calendar, contacts etc are stored.

Take a look at these pages for info on Outlook data backup or transfer:

Unless you were running against Exchange server, all your data would be in a
PST file.
Unless you reformatted your hard drive, it will still be there.
Why you would even try to rename or "substitute" a PST file makes no sense.
Since you do not back up your data, you should avoid actions that will lose
it.
