I have a T2080 from e-machines with Windows XP. My restore CD does not work
properly. This is what happened:

Recently, my screen turned blue with gibberish everywhere. I tried doing a
"safe mode" so that I could get into Windows, and look into this further. I
was given several choices ... safe mode ... restore to previous setting and
so forth. Each of these options would load Windows just fine, but a few
seconds later I would get a message that indicated some major corruption. I
don't remember what action it suggested I'd take, but I was unable to do
ANYTHING since I could not get a prompt. Ever. This is when I decided to
use the restore CD.

Now Windows is up and running, but I get the following problems:

(1) I am trying to load my wireless internet software, but every time I
select "setup" nothing happens. As if it can't read from that drive. Even
though the same drive was used successfully for the restore CD.

(2) I tried using Media Player, just for kicks. It tells me that there are
files missing, and it can't operate it.

(3) The computer recognizes the presence of a peripheral, and it tries to
load the software, but at some point it tells me that it can't do that
because a file is missing. (I don't remember which.)

(4) Some of the original applications, that presumably should be loaded
through the restore CD, are simply not there.

It looks like the restore CD is not doing its job, or I have a bigger
problem that is beyond the ability of the restore CD to fix. My computer is
essentially inoperable.

Can you help?

Thanks.

Claudia

Hello

Have you tried contacting E-Machines and have them send you
another restore cdrom, from what your saying sounds like
the cd is bad.

Yes, I have contacted E-machines, to no avail (yet). If it is as simple as
a bad restore cd - that's not too bad. Is it possible that my computer has
some problems that go beyond the operating system? Thanks.

Yes, it sounds very likely that you were infected with a serious virus or
that your hard drive could be failing. It would help if you wrote down
any messages you see instead of just remembering "something". But it
sounds like perhaps you did a repair re-install from the CD, rather than a
factory-restore; is that possible? Do you have any more detailed
recollection of what you actually did?

And, of course, why are you not running with up-to-date anti-virus
software? Has all this grief made you feel good about saving the perhaps
$15-20 it would cost to protect your system?

IAC, it does not sound like the restore CD is bad, but either you did a
repair re-install and are infected with a virus, or you have a hardware
problem such as a failing disk drive or bad CPU fan or similar (could even
be a bad memory stick.) If you are still under warranty, you need to talk
to eMachines and get support from them, as whatever your problem is, it's
not going to be trivial to fix.

I used the "restore CD" that came along with the computer. I am not given
either of the two options that you described (although one of them may in
fact be the one that is being implemented). The computer boots up
automatically, and the only time I am prompted is when I need to insert disc
2 of 2.

You are assuming too much. I had Norton Utilities installed and I was up to
date.
