Good Afternoon Everyone.

I have a Win2000 Server that I use to backup user's files. It's a tape back
up, and I use the Windows Backup Software.
I'm trying to restore a backup to a WinXP workstation. W2000 is telling me
there is a permission problem and it is not writing the files to the disk.
It's strange because it will write the folder to disk but it will not write
the actual files to disk.
I have the folder and the hard drive marked as shared. I don't know what
else to do to allow the server to write these files to disk. Please advise.

FYI, the user's hard drive crashed and I'm trying to restore files to the
disk.

Thanks!

Anthony

First, this is NOT best practice. Backup of data should be data on a
server, not workstation! If data is important enough to be backed up then
it needs to be on a redundant machine.

Second, you cannot restore over the network unless you have 3rd party s/w
(I'm about 98% sure) so you may have learned a hard lesson.

Good Morning,

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking the problem was XP not necessarily
Windows 2000. That's why
The problem was in fact WinXP. XP won't let me write the files to the disk
for some reason.
Well guess what? I have a Win98 workstation. I am able to restore the files
to this Win98 workstation and then I am copying the files to the WinXP
workstation. This time I am thankful that Win98 is not as secure as a WinXP
workstation. I use that Win98 for 11 x 17 printing that is connected to it.
Thanks for your help anyway. But yes you CAN restore over the nextwork from
the Windows Backup Software. I think I just have to find out how to release
the permissions on the WinXP machine.

Have a blessed day!

Anthony....
