During normal operations, my computer will restart for no
apparent reason. It happens frequently, like at least
once a day. The internet does not have to be connected,
but it does happen when connected as well. It is almost
always in the middle of the program, like word or a
computer game. There is no difference in the duration
the computer has been in use. Sometimes it is after
about 20 minutes and other times it may be after hours of
use. There are not multiple programs being run at the
same time. Almost always it is only one person who is
logged on in XP. I have defragmented the hard drive,
cleaned up the disk space and run the antivirus. I have
85% of my hard drive available. In the middle of the
program, the screen will go black and it will restart
itself.

Is there something I can do to keep this from happening
or find out why it is happening?

Something to try:

Start, run. type "chkdsk /f" without the quotes. Type y for yes, then hit
enter. Reboot.

Check your cpu temps whist operating. Report back.

I am having this exact problem. Driving me nuts. I tried
the chkdsk and it came up with nothing....I have tried
everything you have and still nothing...it seems like it
just started doing this after the last update...have you
had any luck? If anyone knows why this happening,,
please help..

If the problem is from Windows Update, you could try uninstalling it.
1.. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
2.. Click Change or Remove Programs.
3.. Click the correct Windows XP Hotfix, and then click Remove.
4.. Click Next, and then click Finish to restart your computer.
