I try to restart the laptop, but it gets stuck right before the splash screen
of Windos XP.

Does anyone out there have a solution for this sort of problem?

Compaq
Presario 700
Windows XP Home
Service Pack 2
All updates installed

No, This did not help. It shuts down o.k. It's when I restart the system,
the system shuts down fine and the post boot screen comes up. Right before
the splash screen the system halts.
Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your replay.

If I interpret your post correctly, the laptop is halting before Windows
is even loaded. Perhaps it takes a few times to start but the next time
you go to start it, it won't start again. If this is correct, then you
have a classic symptom of a failing power supply. Since this is a
hardware problem and you have a laptop, you will need to contact the
laptop mftr.'s tech support.

Malke, if I try to just shut down. The system will shutdown. After 10
seconds, I try to restart the system, and it works perfectly, without
failure. I also noticed that when it hibernates, it also starts correctly.

Would this work even if the power supply was going bad, or would it also
hang with a power up? (not a restart)

Thanks for your reply

I can't really tell you without looking at the machine, although the
fact that it starts from hibernation doesn't seem like a power supply
problem to me. The power supply thing is usually that there is just
enough juice to get the hard drive started spinning but not all the way
so when you restart the drive momentum takes over and that will get the
drive spinning correctly. However, if the operating system won't load
then there is a good chance the problem is caused by hardware. However,
maybe someone who is more knowledgeable than I about hibernation will
have a different idea.

I would take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not
your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA) and have them take a look. Then
if there is a hardware problem, you may need to send the machine back
to the laptop mftr.

Good luck,

Malke

My money is on a piece of hardware that is not reinitializing for the
"restart". Hybernate and Power Off both force everything off and so are
initialized and don't halt the system during bootup. Any "attached"
hardware?
