A Windows 2000/2003 Server running Terminal Services
allows for the remote restart/shutdown of the system. Is
this option available on a Windows XP Professional PC
running Remote Desktop?

Yes...you have various options...

* Do a <Ctrl><Alt><End> key sequence and bring up the remote Task Manager. Then select the
"Shutdown" menu
at the top of the Task Manager window and select the desired action.

* Use either the shutdown or tsshutdn commands from the command line. Search for either or both in
"Help and Support" for the correct syntax.

Neat. Never seen that tsshutdn command before. Thanks SA.

Also, in many, but not all, remote XP machines, there will be a new start
menu choice for "windows Security" where the usual shutdown/restart options
may be selected. They are basically hidden a level to avoid accidental
shutdowns by remote users.
