I have an "old" Toshiba Protege 3020 computer which is very small. I
love the size of it & I want to take on road to 1) view pictures from
camera 2) check email & surf web via WiFi 3) Use Streets&Trips 4)
address book. I have all 3 Windows versions but am not sure which one
I should install for these uses. These 4 are about the only uses, no
Office, no games, etc & I realize that the speed (300mghz)& RAM
(96MG,max) will never be great. Also 6 GB is not great but plenty
suficient with todays small portable hard drives. I am sacrificing
speed for size but at 8 x 10 x .75 & 3 lbs this thing is great to
carry, even on my motorcycle. What operating system would be most
efficient for me on this computer taking into consideration the speed,
size of RAM and my uses. I have used all of the Windows over the
years but never knew the differences in the resources they need to
operate efficiently. 98 would be fine BUT then I get into special
drivers needed, etc, etc. I would appreciate a quick comparison of the
different systems and a recommendation. Thanks!!

Acceptable performance is, of course, a matter of personal opinion
and depends entirely upon what *you* expect to do with your computer.
However, given the system specifications you've mentioned, I wouldn't
even consider using any OS more demanding than Win98.

In addition, I would recommend Win98 Second Edition since the original
Windows 98 was so buggy. Also, since you seem resolute in keeping this
little gem, I would also recommend that you upgrade it's memory to
it's specified limit to gain as much performance as the Protege can
muster.

Good Luck,

Windows 98 would have the smallest footprint; choose "Minimal" install I
think it is, during installation. Or, if you know what you need, Customize.
Or use the default and then after playing around, use Setup to remove things
if you need more space.
Win98 should really have all the updates installed; do you have them?
ANY windows will need its updates installed. Plust a firewall, av and
spyware would be highly adviseable.

While Windows 98SE might be the OS that takes the least HD
space, the need for potential USB functions such as downloading
from the camera or even WiFi might be more easily achieved with
Windows 2000-SP4. Windows 2000-SP4 would not need additional
USB drivers and this also facilitates the use of external HD's,
jumpdrives, etc., as well.

IMO stay with W/98SE. I rarely say that.

Spend a few bucks to max out the memory.

6GB is too small to run XP.
