Resolution/Color problem

I have WinXP and can't change my resolution from 800x600
or my color from Lowest (4-bit). I don't have a virus, my
drivers are up-to-date (including my display adapter),
I've tried changing to another monitor which didn't help
and "Troubleshooting" through XP was of no help. Just
before my display went nuts, my 2nd partitician almost
got full, so I moved some files to my main partition. It
was after I got the message that my drive was filling up
that the problem occurred. Since freeing up space and all
other venues didn't help, I hope someone out there can
PLEASE give me an idea as to what to try. Thanks bunches!

Boot into Safe Mode, open Device Manager, remove all instances of your
display adapter(s) and monitor, reboot and let Windows re-identify your
hardware.

Thank you so much Jerry, it worked like a charm! It seems strange that this problem arose and I haven't had problems in 2 years. I'd installed a new display adapter from NVIDIA as well as trying a lot of other things, but you were the one that finally save my computer - it almost wound up in the trash

Thanks again
Linda

Glad to hear it fixed your problem.

I'm thrilled your advice worked so well, but now I'm getting an error message when my system boots that I haven't had appear before. The title of the error is "Rundll." It references an "error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\NVMCTRAY.DLL", saying the specified module could not be found. Was the error related to the fact that I removed the display adapter and let Windows re-identify the hardware? Can I copy the missing module from my Windows XP CD or is there something else you would suggest

Boy, I really need to learn a lot about configuration! Thanks again for your help

I think I've tracked down what's causing the Rundll error message. When I removed my display adapter in the device manager as you suggested, the NVMCTRAY.DLL was apparently deleted. This apparently causes the error message. I tried to use Add/Remove programs in Control Panel and it won't let me remove NVIDIA, my display adapter program, since the NVMCTRAY.DLL file is missing. Where can I go to see where the file is being loaded so I can remove reference to it? Should I download the new driver for the display adapter or what? I hesitate to work in the registry as I've not done it before and I don't want to crash my system. I realize the error message isn't doing any harm, but it sure is irritating.
