I bought a floor model Sony computer from my local best buy, but they lost all the setup disks.
When I got it home, I found they had actually sold it to Sam E and he had activated the copy of XP. The files by default want to go into a folder in his name. I'd like to get rid of all previous references to Sam, but when I try to delete the directory I get an error message that it is in use. Sam is not listed as a User. I have the Cert of Authenticity.

Please don't take this as a sarcastic answer because it is really not.

Return the computer to your local store for either a refund or a new
machine. They should never have sold you a machine with a previously
activated copy of Windows and losing the disks is completely unacceptable.

Lastly IMHO, you'd do much better to stay away from buying a computer at a
retail store and buy a machine from a Dell or gateway seller.

Scott M.'s reply to KevinC was qute but dose not address the question. I have a similar problem, my comuter was setup for "HP Autorized User". When I try to connect to the internet it defaults to "HP Autorized User" and I have to sign on as a gest. How do I change ownership of the computer, without having to reinstall everything.

Roy, the answer is to create another Administrator account and to use that
account when you log in. In Control Panel, you can create a new user and
also the way that users log on to the PC.

And you're right, I didn't mention this in my first reply because it really
isn't the answer. I wasn't trying to be cute or sarcastic. You have the
right to a fresh, never been used copy of Windows when you buy a new pc that
ships with Windows. For example, when I bought my last Dell (about 6 months
ago), it comes with Windows not quite finished with its setup so that the
user can finish the setup with thier information.

On my second request to Sony for assistance yesterday, I got a reply that replacement disks were available from the Sony Parts center at http://salesservice.sel.com For my model $22.95. Problem solved. My bargain computer purchase should now be safe.

I'm glad you've got a solution you are happy with Kevin. IMHO you shouldn't
have to pay for another copy of Windows and install it yourself, when that's
what you thought you were getting in the first place.
