requires CD after new install

Joe

I just reformatted and reintalled XP Professional. Now, it
prompts for the Windows CD System disk (WinXP CD) before
booting to Windows.

When I put the CD in and boot, it prompts to boot from CD.
I let it sit thus declining to boot. Windows then starts
normally. I'm convinced it merely wants the CD to be there
and that it's not actually using it :) Any ideas?

Hi Joe,

Boot the WinXP CD, run the recovery console. From the command prompt run
fixboot.

Hi Joe,

Check the system BIOS (there's nothing wrong with that boot.ini file), try
switching the boot order so the hard drive is set ahead of the CD drive.
Also, are there any files on the root of C:\ that could possibly be pointing
to it? All that should be there are ntldr, ntdetect.com, and boot.ini and
perhaps a few others.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS = "Microsoft

Messages displayed on boot:
Leaving the CD drive empty causes it to prompt, "Boot from
ATAPI cd rom : Disk Boot Failure, Insert system disk and
press enter"

When the CD is left in, it prompts 'Booting from ATAPI
CDROM - To boot from CD ROM press any key'

I leave it for a few seconds (thus declining to boot from
CD), and it starts Windows normally.

Thanks,
Joe

The boot order already has the HDD1 before CD Rom. As far as any files in
C:\, everything looks normal. I'm in the process of trying to find newer
drivers for the cd rom itself - perhaps it could be sparking this error.

Thanks,
Joe Ware

I may have just solved the problem. Apparently, it should now be
HDD-0...bah!

In any case, your assistance was much appreciated.

Thanks again,

Go into your BIOS setup and change the boot order there to boot the Hard
disk before the CD.

If it is already set that way,, then the likely answer is that at power
on, your hard disk is taking a long time to run up and initialise, so
the BIOS does not find it and goes on to CD. In that case you might get
a delay by having floppy then HD then CD as the order
