Totally free and 0 download size. It's called "Sort" and it comes as
part of Windows. (No GUI, though, it's a command line program.) Sort
starting on whichever column you want. Type sort /? for a help list.
This do you?

Simple to use - just load the file, then save it .... (sorts
automatically)
If you'd like command line support, lemme know and I'll add it for you
;o)
ms said:Steve, yours was the first one I tried, a small executable (thanks), and
it works fine. It works best, I assume on a list of 1-line entries,
which is what I needed.
In a paragraph, it partially works, can't seem to handle a sentence that
is longer than some limit, I guess.
Still, just what I needed,
Thanks again.
It's not specifically what you're asking for, but Note Tab Light
http://www.notetab.com/
is something I highly recommend for text manipulation and other
features. A little heavy for a notepad replacement (Metapad does the
job for me there) but the "Modify" menu has your sort feature along
with a lot of others useful for reformatting text to suit your needs.
for doing almost any imaginable action to a list of text, try
Columnizer ....
http://www.all4you.dk/FreewareWorld/Columnizer-2602.html
it will alphabetize...and.....
"Columnizer is a special text editing program for working with column
and row data. Processing includes: - Realign HTML; - Insert into a
column of data; - Insert a column of data; - Copy/Move a column of
data; - Replace data within a specified column; - Total a specified
column; - Retain/Delete a column of data; - Insert a row; - Delete a
row of data; - Delete blank lines; - Retain/Delete lines per data; -
Insert lines per data; - Insert a carrage control; - Vertical column
concatenation; - Horizontal column concatenation; - Append lines per
data; - Retain/Delete starting at specified data; - Insert data within
line before/after specified data; - Insert incrementing numbers; -
Delete leading/trailing blanks; - Special Routines; - Format data for
ReadMe; - Sort Ascending/Descending; - Break up a single record file."

I do use Note Tab for it's features, but I just looked through Modify and
don't see anything about alpabetize? Which setting?
Mike Sa
Bill, it is a swiss army knife for files! But with all those icons, I
will have to read the help file to figure out where it alphabetizes.
Thanks,
Mike Sa
Thanks, Ron.It's "Modify > Lines > Sort > Ascending (or) Descending"
There is a WEALTH of text manipulation possibilities under the
"Modify" menu. Check out the help file from "Contents" and go to
"Reference information > Menu Commands > Modify Menu" and spend some
time drilling down through all the possibilities. Nicer still is if
you have certain repetitive tasks, you can customize your toolbar
buttons accordingly under "View > Options > Toolbar."
In other newsgroups (and emails) with many levels of quoting and line
breaks at odd places, the format used to get pretty sloppy. I set a
string of buttons for things like "Join Lines," "Split Lines,"
"Indent," "Unindent," "Quote," "Unquote," etc. I set the window to
break at about 70 characters in 12 point Courier New, so afrer
cleanup, I just hit the "Select All" and "Copy" buttons and had a
beautifully formatted message to paste into my mail/news client.
I spend much more time lurking than I do posting nowadays, so I don't
use that method much, but when I need to, it's there and quick.

line.
To sort: Ctrl+A > Format > Sort

Thanks for that, Ross. Edxor is great, it is my default text editor, will
try this tip.
If you use Edxor, do you notice that Find and Replace don't always work in
a long file?
The author says they work fine, but I find they don't always.
