Hi,

Whenever I right-click anything (folder, images etc) on my desktop or within
a folder I get this error:

[Explorer.Exe - Fatal Application Exit]
Fatal application texts. Immediate exit.

I have to click [OK] and then my process bar and desktop disappear. I have
to log off and logon again to get it back.

It seems to me that this only happens "inside" windows itself (Explorer?)
because I safly right click within any program (Dreamweaver, Photoshop,
Outlook, Internet Explorer etc)

Extremely annoying because right-clicking is rather common in windows :o)

Anyone?

Best regards
Kim

Kim,
You have different symptoms, but you could try the steps at described
at the URLs in this URL (they won't hurt anything & they might help):

Hi Jeremy,

Thank you very much... but unfortunately that didn't relate to my problem.
My problem seems to be the missing context menu on right click. I think
that's what the error is saying and that's what I'm expiring.

This is very annoying and I've no idea what might have caused the problem.

Recently I've installed Photoshop CS and J2EE 1.4.2 SDK. I tried to search
Sun's site for error messages but nothing useful.

This is extremely annoying and I tried to do a Google search using various
search terms but nothing that pin point my problem... or even seem to have
the faintest relation to my problem. I get a lot of IE related stuff.

I could really do with some help here

Kim

Remove Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 back to a prior version through Add\Remove if you can.
reboot. Cleanup personal settings upon reboot.

Reinstall your current Service Pack for Windows 2000 AFTER you do the above or if you cannot, just reinstall the service pack for Windows 2000..
reboot

Go to the Windows Update site and get the December 2003 Cumulative Update to your version of Microsoft Internet Explorer. Should be IE 5.01 SP4 now.
reboot

Start | Run | regsvr32 -u thumbvw.dll | OK | OK.
reboot

If you choose to return to your current version of Microsoft Internet Explorer then before you do go to Start | Run | regedit | OK

Navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}

change:
IsInstalled value on right from 1 to 0 if it is not already 0.

Then reinstall your version of Microsoft Internet Explorer. Reboot.
Let me know if the status of this behavior after you've done the above.

Hi,

I also figured out why I've to log off before I can use my computer again.
Explorer hangs so I've to wait for the "program not responding... end now"

Besides that I uninstalled Photoshop CS... no difference :o(

Hi Jeremy,

I followed the steps in the URL but that didn't work either. So now I'm a
little worried because the "ITBarLayout" has not been recreated as described
in the URL. At least I can't seem them under the Should I worry?

IE and Windows Explore works fine as they use to but the problem persist.

IE and Windows Explore works fine as they use to but the problem persist.

In case you didn't export the Registry key before deleting the value within it,
I have attached my ITBarLayout.reg file (.zip'd) for you to install.

However, that value, ITBarLayout, is automatically regenerated by Explorer
(when Explorer is working correctly). So if you fix your original Explorer
problem, the ITBarLayout value will be fixed automatically.

Hi George,

I could not uninstall SP4 without a BSOD :o(

So I tried to do a "repair install"... again. That didn't work either but
then I looked over what I've been installing over the past month or so. Not
a lot but I uninstalled everything... and yes... it's working.

If I ever figure out what caused the problem I'll let you kind people know.

Thanks for all your help

Do not apply IE security updates when they are available. Wait. There is really no harm in waiting,. These security updates to IE are really for esoteric issues that likely will never occur outside oif the KGB or the CIA. Not all security updates fall under this rubric but the IE security fixes usually do. And they can be devasting to your system.

No IE flaw is going to wipe your harddrive. So if you ever come across one of these security flaws, then by all means get the security fix. But until then why put yourself at risk for such an issue as you experienced?

The trouble here is that IE 6 and Windows 2000 are not on friendly terms. Therefore when you apply security fixes to IE then it just makes their relationship that more antagonistic. I realize I am speaking in euphamisms I am just trying to give you the impression that updating IE with security fixes often results in a misbehavng system. And installing IE 6 in Windows 2000 can be a recipe for disaster. The same type of thing happened in Windows NT 4 when IE 5 was released.

Finally if you are not experiencing the issue anymore and you still have IE 6 installed go to Start | Run | regsvr32 thumbvw.dll | OK. Then Start | Run | regedit | OK

Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xml\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1} and delete this key (always backup the key first). If the issue starts again do again Start | Run | regsvr32 -u thumbvw.dll | OK. But the above key is the culprit for Windows 2000 and IE6.

Finally I need to tell you that this regsvr32 -u thumbvw.dll I am telling you to do will stop image previews in Windows Explorer. But that is a small price to pay for stopping the crashing Windows Explorer.
