Can someone please help with the above problem? I am using a Sony VAIO with
XP Pro O/S. Have had no problems with my CD-RW drive since purchasing the
computer in October 01, but suddenly I am getting the above error message
when I insert a blank CD into my CD-RW drive. No problem with playing audio
CDs or reading data CDs, just cannot burn CDs.

I checked the Microsoft site and read the KB article 315350 but I do not
have Roxio Easy CD Creator installed on my system so I don't believe this is
the cause.

I would be grateful for any suggestions and to what I should try. I should
mention that I am a computer user, not a technical expert :-)

PS I also tried the solution suggested by Kelly to a post by another user on
12 June for same problem, ie. to download and instal a file 'xp_cd_dvd_fix'
but this didn't work for me.

I might mention that when I look at my F drive in Windows Explorer its label
is DVD/CD-RW Drive (F:). However, as soon as I insert a blank CD into the
drive it changes to CD Drive (F:).

Lastly, I have Norton Systemworks installed on my system but even when I
disable it competely and restart without NAV the error message still
persists.

Sorry for being so long winded!

On this note:

busTRACE Technologies has developed a simple utility that allows you to view
details about your CD-Recorder and the media that is inserted into the
drive. This utility will show you which of your CD/DVD devices Windows XP
has installed CD Recording support for.

If you are using a driver from the manufacturer of the drive and not the
driver that is supplied by Microsoft, make sure that you have the driver
available. You may need to remove the driver and reinstall it if it has
become corrupted.

Other than the above a REPOST won't help, if the first post didn't fly.
Good luck!

Thank you Kelly!

I followed the instructions in the KB article 316529 and noticed that the
drive was not checked as a drive to be used for recording on the Recording
tab under Properties for the drive (in My Computer). I then downloaded the
busTRACE utility and inserted a blank CD in the drive. It identified the
'recorder type' as a CD-RW drive and showed that there was a blank CD-R in
the drive.

I then opened Windows Explorer and right clicked the CD-RW drive and opened
it and the 'write these files to CD box appeared'.

Many thanks for your help. I was at a complete loss without it.
