Hi All,

I have Windows XP Pro and did my first back-up which consists of My
Documents and Settings (As determined by the back-up program). It took a
long time to do (Ext. hard drive USB 11 hours for 35 Gigs).

For the next time I do the back-up, I was told to choose a different setting
that will only add files/folders that were not there before and will
overwrite files that have changed. I am told it will be much faster. I don't
want to mess this up, so what should I do?

Do I need registry as well? Should I do an image each time, etc. Thanks for
any feedback that will assist.

Sam

What backup program did you use. Its very hard to advise without knowing the
program. I use Ghost and do an incremental back up every day which only
backs up the files that have changed. If your backup program allows
incremental do that. There is no need usually to back up everything
everyday.

Sorry. I use the Windows XP Pro back-up utility which I have done the MY
DOCUMENTS and SETTINGS only back-up so far.

Thanks,
Sam

If you are serious about backing up get a program like Norton Ghost or
Acronis True Image as it will make a full image of your hard drive or
partitions then you can do an incremental backup. The built in backup
program has limited value. You can use it if thats all you got but its no
where near as good as the mentioned programs. However, you can set it up to
do an incremental backup of the same folders you already backed up. This
would protect the files but you wouldn't be able to recover Windows if your
system drive became corrupt. Obviously how you proceed now depends on your
own needs and what you are prepared to do.

My advice would be to get a second hard drive and norton ghost and use that.
Others will tell you different. Do what suits you.

There is an Advanced option that you can chose what type of backup you want
to do.
