It was an MCSE that said you could verify that a user was
added to a workstation correctly if the folder name
was "username.domainname".

I know the gal was an MCSE because I sent her to the
training. Is she wrong?

I have thousands of users in multiple domains I deal with daily. I do see
the occasional ".domainname" username there, but I also see
".workstationname" and ".###" often too. As well as, with the ones I
consider working properly, NO extension.

It's not that the MCSE was wrong, she may have been going "strictly by the
book", which almost never represents real life. Experience should be the
real teacher. =)
