When I reply to an email the left pointing "replied" icon does not appear so
I cannot tell whether or not I have replied to an email. Also the" replied
to" date does not appear when I hover over the Inbox message header.
To compound this, email is sent normally but a copy always ends up in my
Inbox, despite there being no rule in place for this action. I am using
Outlook 2003 with XP.
Thank you in anticipation of your help.

Did you ever get a response/resolution for this? We are having the same
problem and I have been unable to get it resolved.
Thanks,
Pam

Hi Pam.
No, I never had a reply to these problems but I have managed to work them
both out for myself!
With regard to the non-appearance of the "replied to" arrow in answered
email this option is NOT supported in Outlook and is simply therefore not
available whatever settings you choose. I got this from Microsoft itself. In
its absence I highlight unanswered mails by marking them as "un-read" even if
I have read them. I then know that all unanswered emails are in bold, or if
you use POP3 email you can flag unanswered mail with, say, a red flag.
The problem of sent email being copied to your own Inbox is solved as
follows :-
In Outlook, Email layout, go to Tools, Options, E-mail Options, Advanced
E-mail Options, then "un-tick" box " In folders other than the Inbox, save
replies with original message" ie do NOT select this option. Then OK,OK,OK.
Mail is then sent normally without it appearing in your own Inbox.
I am not at all sure what the usefulness of this option is, all I know is
that I am well rid of it!!!!
Hope that helps.
Regards,
David

All versions of Outlook I've tried have a "replied-to" arrow on the icon for
messages to which I've replied.

I definitely had a reply from a Boston College forum site that said
MS had not made this feature available in Outlook. I assumed that was
correct. I also read in Outlook Help that non POP3 email, ie internet
email such as Hotmail, which I use, did not support flagging or
follow up options so I am unable to "flag" unanswered mail.

I can well imagine that an HTTP Hotmail account would not, since you cannot
designate a Hotmail message store as the delivery location. The same
applies to IMAP message stores because they, too, cannot be designated as
the delivery location. I suspect, however, that Hotmail accessed via
Outlook Live would show the forward/reply icons, since you can designate
that message store as your delivery location, as you can POP and Exchange
message stores, which also work.
I do get
both read and unread envelope icons but they stubbonly refuse to
change to "replied" envelope icons after I have replied to an email.
Interestingly, I DO get replied envelope icons when using Hotmail by
itself but not in conjuntion with Outlook 2003.
So the mystery deepens!

I don't see a mystery at all.

Hi Brian,
Thank you for your response.
I do understand all you say but until I had that explanation from you it was
a mystery to me.
As I am going to continue to use Hotmail then I will have to accept this
minor inconvenience

Well, I just proved myself wrong, at least on this point. The reply icon
shows up with an IMAP account just fine.

Hi Brian,
Delighted to see someone else can own own up to being wrong!!!
Am I right in thinking this still does NOT apply to Hotmail? I am not an
expert on anything computer so any advice would be gratefully received.
Kind regards,
David

It's not wrong the way you want it, though, since the reply and forward
icons still appear in mine and not in yours. said:

I can't try it, at least where I am now. My company doesn't allow
connection to external mail sites, even by a web browser. If I remember, I
can try it at home, but probably not tonight. Perhaps tomorrow night.
