Replicating AD for development domain

What is the best way to replicate our live active directory database to a clean development domain - is it even likely to work

Our in house development team are writing a new system that relies heavily on AD for it's authentication and security. They will need to update the schema and will probably be rolling AD backwards as tests go on.

They want a adjacent development domain to mirror what we have in the live environment.

Can I easily backup AD from live and restore to the development domain?

Any other thoughts/ideas would be appreciated
