Hi,

We want to send out a quickie message to our users incase there is a problem
with a server (or whatever). Windows Messenger service (not MSN) would of did
the trick a while back but it's obviously disabled now.

Is the a small lightweight application that can be installed on clients
where we can send out a fast message - hopefully with a port of our choice
(and maybe even free?).

Thanks

Re-enable the Messenger service. It's just turned off, not missing. You
can either use the SERVICES.MSC console to turn it on, or in a larger
organization, use Group Policy or a Registry push to turn it on.

It depends on the messenger service but there is a little utility called
"Net Send" at the site below that you might find useful.

Wasn't the whole point of disabling the Windows Messenger service was to stop
those anoying pop-ups from the Internet that were all the rage a couple of
years back.

Not quite. It does have that effect but that wasn't the purpose. Anyway,
you should be able to block them at your broadband router or periphery
defense hardware.
