Please help once again.

I have 2 computers. one is a 333mhz the other a 666mhz. I
have a maxtor hard drive in the first with XP and all my
programs and in the other (a Seagate)only has windows
xp installed. The 333mhz is so slow and unstable. I
tried to swap the hard drive out to the faster computer.
I am having so many difficulties getting it to start up.
All I get is a back screen with a blinking cursor. When I
put the drives back into their original boxes, they work
fine. I have tried to change jumpers, bios settings and
nothing seems to help. What I want to do is reformate the
maxtor to turn it into extra storage for pictures and
crafting projects which require more space. My fear is
wiping out my drive if I try to many tricks since I don't
have all the software to reload. I have the XP upgrade
and could repair the drive to boot but, will I lose my
installed software and files? Any suggestions? Thanking
you in advance.
