Replacing Excel Template

Ok, quick question...

What are the potential ramifications of replacing the template file in
Excel?

I have created a new template file with my companys colors and want to
send it to others, but don't want to mess anyone up... Thanks!

You mean you want to change book.xlt in the XLStart folder?

It would depend on what the other users do with excel. If they only want to
make workbooks that are based on that template, then you'd be fine.

But if they wanted to do other things, then I would think it wouldn't be so
nice.

Why not just save it as a template and have the other users doubleclick on it in
windows explorer when they want to create a new workbook based on that template?

What exactly do you mean by "template file"?

Are you referring to a "Folder" on a drive, or a single XL workbook (file)?

Are you referring to the default WB that opens with XL?

If you can be more specific, there are *always* more then one way to skin a
cat in XL.

Thanks for the feedback! I am speaking specifically about replacing
the file "book.xlt" with my own version with a version that has my
company's palette included. Sorry I wasn't more specific at the outset.

So Dave's interpretation of your question was correct, BUT ... how about his
question AN D *your* question,
About "messing up other people"?

Dave's suggestion of simply creating an XL template would be the recommended
way to go.
You can access it from the <File> <New> folder, where a *copy* is opened,
preserving the original from accidental modification.

I'm still a little confused by you saying "send to others".

Are you, or are you not, on a network?

What I meant by sending it to others was that I would push it out over
a network so that it would automatically change... I am concerned about
removing macros or other customizable data....

I never said that I was overly bright, so I guess that's why I'm still
confused.

<<<"push it out over a network so that it would automatically change...">>>

I haven't the slightest idea what you mean by that.

Under normal circumstances, you store a template in a file on the server
that's accessible to all the machines who have permission to use that file.

Users have access to the template by clicking on <File> <New> <General> tab.
The *original* template is *not* opened when accessed by a user.
A *copy* is opened, preserving the original from any accidental /
intentional modifications or revisions.

Now, that's a normal set-up.

What exactly are you referring to?

At my company the template files are still stored local and so each
indivual machine has to be updated... thats what I meant.

Is there any reason why you don't "network" your entire template file, so
that revising / updating can be accomplished from your individual machine?
