My computer is 5 years old, the motherboard bit the dust :( . I was running
XP Pro SP2. I don't have a recent backup, I know better, but didn't do it. I
took the computer to a teck and had the motherboard replaced plus had to get
new ram and also got another hard drive (both 160GB). Teck set the new hd as
primary and my old HD with all my info as slave.

Question one: Would I be better disabling my old HD as slave until I have
reinsalled XP on the new HD and updated all the necessary files?

Question two: Where does XP hide the email messages for MS Express and how
do I retrieve them?

I have copies of my email addresses, it's just my message folders that I need.
I know I have to reinstall all my other programs, them copy all supporting
files to the new HD.

Quetion three: I guess there is no way to have the old HD working with a new
motherboard/bios is there?

Yeh, you can BUT..... what you should do is to perform a windows "repair"
with your windows cd setup disk before trying to access any of your
disks........

The fact that you hardware configuration has changed, your previous
installation may not work if you try to boot from it. So it needs to go
through a repair process first.

Since you might have a new motherboard and depending on your bios/cmos, you
can probably set your old harddrive as the boot drive. But right now, you
need to ensure your cd rom is the boot up drive for the windows cd.

Even if you don't know how to swith the hard drives around inside the pc to
make the old hd the master or your motherboard doesn't support making the
slave the boot drive, Windows will make a boot menu that will target your old
installation and allow you to boot to it - as if the old hard drive were the
master.....

I am afraid to do a "Repair" to the OLD Operation system HD incase it messes
up and I loose the info on the drive! Is a repair always necessary if you
change the motherboard & ram on a computer? If I do a repair which disk
should I use, XP Pro SP1 or the Xp Pro SP2 disk Microsoft sent me.

I wouldl rather do a clean install on the new HD and copy the files I need
over from the old HD. Atleast it cleans out some of the "crap" that has
accumulated over the past 5 years.

Where does Xp hide my email messages on my old HD?

I read the XPrepairinstall.htm, but I don't want to take a chance that of
loosing the info on my old Hd. Also I have XP pro SP1 disk and a updated
XPsp2 disk, which would you use for the repair? I had my old drive on auto
update for XP so it was up todate. This is very fustrating.... I appreciate
tyhe help very much..Sandy W

repair doesnt damage anything, hence the term "repair".

It is designed to repair system files that are corrupted. Because of the
new hardware, the system files require to be syncronized with your system.
If you choose repair, select new install. The cd will search all your drives
to give you its recommendation. Then you will have 2 choices to make, either
setup a brand new windows on the new drive or setup on the old installation.

If you choose the old installation, it will give you 2 choices, to reintall
a brand new one over the old one or to repair the old one.

But if you have your mind set on using your brand new hd. Then install a new
version on it and forgot about the repair. Once you are functional you can
transfer your personal stuff from the old onto the new. Then later, you can
choose to repair the old one without fearing any losses and if you want to
learn something new.....

Thank you for the help! I'll install the new HD, grab the files I need from
the old HD.
Then I will do as you suggest and try to repair the Old HD, I am definately
always will to learn something new, just don't want to loose some important
info on the old drive. Thanks, your reply was very helpfull. Cheers SandyW
