I just bought a new PC and want to get regular Microsoft Word instead of the
WordPerfect it comes with - help!

Visit a nearby store that sells computer software and
purchase a copy of Microsoft Word or Microsoft Works
Suite or Microsoft Office.

Too bad you don't have any qualifying MS products
that would allow you to upgrade to Word 2003. All
of us who have Word have had to bite the bullet and
pay a higher price for Word up-front, but from then on,
we qualify for Word updates.

To obtain MS Word (version 2002, which is quite fine),
purchase Microsoft Works Suite for $89-$99. It
includes MS Word 2002, and is the cheapest, most
effective way to get your hands on Word. Check
out Works suite comparisons at:

http://www.microsoft.com/products/works/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=002&active_tab=Compare

After installing Word, you can then qualify for future
MS Word upgrades at a lower price.

Don't be suckered by the online sales outlets offering
Word or Works for $39.99. For $39.99, you'll be
buying grief.

1) Go to store/shop that sells computer software.

2) Purchase either Microsoft Word, the Microsoft Works Suite, or the
Microsoft Office suite.

3) Return home.

4) Insert installation CD in PC's CD drive and follow the on-screen
prompts and instructions to install application and desired additional
features.

Uncle Joe, I also want to replace WordPerfect with MS Word. I saw on EBay a
store that sells MS Office Suite 2005 for 39.95, in wrap with certification
etc. Do you think this is legit?

I doubt it. You should never buy software from eBay!

Oh, this is a store with a website. I went to their website to take a look.
It gives all the info about them. I don't know if I can give that info here
or not. It is BlueNova Computing. You still think it is not legit? Thanks for
your input, I don't want to get stuck with something that does not work.

The seller is offering "Microsoft Works Suite 2005",
and not Microsoft Office! There is no such program
known as "MS Office Suite 2005"! The latest Microsoft
Office product is know as "Microsoft Office 2003".

What's in the Office 2003 Editions?

Hey thanks for the info Carey, I will not purchase that product. I will see
if a friend may have a copy I can get. Software is so expensive to buy new.
Thanks again. Have a Merry Christmas

Borrowing a "friend's copy" is not legal. If it is a later version of
Office (one that requires activation) you will get caught.
Yes, software can be a major expense you did not count on when you bought
the computer.
However, insurance, license, etc. are major expenses that you don't like
when you buy a car, but they have to be bought.

This is strictly not correct. Office 2003 can be installed on two
systems - Desktop and other portable. If your friend is using on only
one system then you can install it on another system provided you don't use
it simultaneously. But then who is going to come to your house to check this
out? M$ has better ways to make money then to make a visit to your house.

So you ALSO advocate LIES and THEFT?

No.

Absolutely not.

Ask yourself how an eBay firm can sell a product for $60 less than reputable outlets.
There's no way. Remember the old cliché, "If it seems too good to be true, it IS
too good to be true." Never buy software from eBay. You'd have as much
success buying software from a flea market...and there's nothing legit in a flea
market. Everything there is a knockoff...even the cans of Coca-Cola there
contain Pepsi Cola. (Grin.)

As Cary said, there's no such thing as MS Office Suite 2005 or 2006. They
are speaking of MS Works Suite 2005 or 2006...which is what I recommended
to you in the first place. You can't buy a legit shrink-wrapped copy (with
certificate of authenticity (COA) and license code) for $39.95. Something is
wrong. Run the other way.

And even if your buddy has a copy of MS Word 2003 on his laptop, and the EULA
allows a copy to be run on a desktop AND a laptop, the EULA implies (assumes?) that
the two of you work at the same company or live under the same roof. The EULA does
not get so specific as to spell out that you wouldn't be able to share a license if you
live 16 miles from your buddy. That may be tenuously legal--if you get Bill Clinton to
parse the EULA for you--but it's not legal in the spirit of the law. Of course, you don't
get sued, fined, or tossed in jail for violating the spirit of a law. I doubt the software police
will come knocking on your door.
