Replace Corrupt I386 file

I have been unsuccessful running Windows XP scannow. I have successfully
made recommended changes in the registry but system still asks for the
installation CD. Then it fails to recognize the CD.

I have come to the conclusion that the C:\I386 file is corrupted. I can
replace it from the CD. However, the existing file is substantially larger
than its potential CD replacement. Do I lose anything by making the change?

I have a current copy of the existing I386 at D:\I386.

The i386 image on the drive is probably either slipstreamed or contains
drivers and such the CD version does not.
