I bought a Dell laptop with ME. LAst year I upgraded to XP Pro. Now, I
am having a problem. Dell support says to repair WIndows. I follow the
directions at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/tips/dougknox/
doug92.asp

but after accepting the agreement by pressing F8, I get a message to
install my ME, 2000, 98 cd.

Dell says I should not see that message, but I do.

Should I install the restore CD I got with my purchase? If so, will this
send me back to ME? In a separate email to Dell, they said I should not
need the ME CD, that the XP Upgrade should be fine.

But I still get the message?

Why? What can I do? What should I do?

Hi Allan,
If you purchased the upgrade version, all the prompt is
doing is requesting the previous version so that it can
look for a few files to verify that you have an
upgradable copy of Windows. If you put the CD in and let
the installation look for these files, your installation
of XP should continue for you.

If the repair option is not present perhaps a chkdsk /r
is in order.
To perform this, boot from the cd and press R to repair
an installation in recovery console when prompted.
What installation do you want to log onto? Type 1 and
then enter.
If it asks for an Admin password try it blank.
When you get to a C:\Windows prompt type in chkdsk /r and
hit enter. Let it do its thing. It will give you a report
at the end.
Once it is finished type exit and press enter.
Boot from the cd again. See if the repair option is now
availiable in setup. If it is not, boot up to windows
normally and perform another upgrade. This will pretty
much achieve the same thing as a repair.
