Repairing XP Pro Install

I started Windows up after trying to install a new motherboard (too big for
case) and replaced the old one back.

It came up with a missing file. I shut down and restarted. Now it comes with
the Windows XP splash screen for about one second then quickly flashes the
blue crash screen (too fast to read anything) then restarts the computer.

I have tried every boot option and ran a extensive DSKCHK. I tried the BOOT
LOG start, but where is the log? Cannot find it.

I thought there was an install option where you could repair the current
installion replacing Windows back to its original first condition without
loosing the configuration data/application installs.

So I end up installing another copy of Windows XP Pro on the drive and it
works fine.
What about copying some of the files over to the old directory?

Not totally sure which ones I would copy. I do not want to copy too much and
end up with another copy of the same exact OS I just installed.

I did read an intertesting tutoral

http://www.digitalwebcast.com/2002/03_mar/tutorials/cw_boot_toot.htm

This however makes an assumption that an application was installed to cause
this crash.

So started to try it.

md tmp

copy C:\windows\system32\config\system C:\windows\tmp\system.bak

Then I get an error: Access Denied

Thanks for any insight.

.
I am having the exact same problem. My motherboard
crashed so I installed a new one. Upon booting up, it
tells me I am missing files. I tried loading off the cd
and using the repair option. It gives me the choice of
using my existing configuration for xp pro. However,
when it runs, I end up getting a message saying it was
unable to load windows xp, contact an administrator.

If you have found an answer to your issue please share, I
will do the same if I find something.

Looking on the group, it is defintely a conflict or hardware problem.

I reset the BIOS and now both copies lock up at the Mup.sys file. (not
really the problem)

But now the repair otpion on the windows xp cd comes up now!

Yahoo! Trying to repair now.

Will let you know how it goes

I am now reinstalling the second installation of windows.
It seems to be working.

Still have to find out why the lock up
