Hello,

My virus software detected a software in a windows file called soundmon.exe,
and wubsequently removed said file.

The absence of this file seems to do nothing other than give me an error
message when I boot the computer.

Is this file important? If it is, is there a way to restore it with out
having to restore windows from scratch? If not, is there at least a way to
stop windows from removing it?

That file is part of the virus that was not removed, unhide your files and
folders
and navigate to your system32 folder and delete the file.

MAP,

I tried yoru solution, unfortunatly that file is not located in the system32
folder. The system is however still looking for it. What can I do to get
the system to stop looking for it?

start->run->msconfig.

Look on the startup tab for a reference to the file and uncheck it.

OK. Look on the services tab. To save searching, click the option to hide
all Microsoft services and be patient while it regenerates the list.

I did as you have suggested. The only things on there that were not
microsfot services was my Printer software and the Symantec Anti virus
software.

OK. It may have been hooked as a driver which is a bit more awkward to chase
down. :-/

First force a system restore check point. You might need in case you clip
the wrong thing.

You're going to need to scan the registry. Do start->run->regedit [enter].
Click on the HKCU branch to give it focus then hit ctrl-f to bring up the
find window. Make sure that Keys, Values and Data are selected as part of
the search. Do not check 'match whole string only'. In the 'find what' box
enter soundmon.exe and hit 'find next'. Delete all references you find.
Reboot the system and see what happens.

If you get into trouble, use system restore to recover.
