repairing a missing/damaged windows file..

Hi, we seem to have lost a system file, and i have not been successful at
repairing it... anyone help?
the file is \system32\hal.dll

Simply install xp cd,exit the info page,then go to run,type:cmd In cmd
type:Sfc /Scannow When its thru,type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree to restart,
then type:EXIT Restart computer,remove xp cd.
 
How do you know hal.dll is missing?
Are you getting any error messages?

Hi Wesley, I too have the same problem and can get my desktop computer
to start up pass the dos error screen. I can not restore nor get pass the
error
message of the Bad BOOT.ini and missing or corrupt file...\system32\hal.dll.
Have no way to re-install that file.

If you find an answer please could you share your fix?
If I get or find a fix I shall be happy to pass it on to you!
Meanwhile if anyone comes across how I might restore my Winxp-pro, I would
be very appreciative!

Hi, Guys.....I have the same situation. I looked at the solutions that
Wesley suggested but in each case, the fix was dependent on having a computer
configured for multiple OS.....which mine is not.....so I too would really
appreciate any help I can get! Thanks......

two suggestions.

First is to boot to the recovery console. From there I would do a check
disk.

chkdsk /p

then try and fix the boot.

fixboot

If neither works you can use recovery console to replace files that may
be missing or corrupted.

To get to Recovery Console boot with your windows XP CD and choose r at
the first option.

Have identical problem. Inserted SP2 disk and not able to locate R for
repair. Went to Remove/Reinstall and not able to locate Windows SP2 after
following directions to click updates. Any advice would be appreciated.
