I am trying to support a computer that has me befuddled.
It has been running XP reliably for the last three months
and I was called yesterday because it will not boot up at
all. I booted from the CD but repair is not an option. R
only takes you to a recovery command promt. what short on
a reinstall can I do to save this box?

.
from recovery console chkdsk /r

also remove any hardware peripherals other than keyboard
monitor and mouse.

if chkdsk doesnt find problems then try 307545.

how does one get to be paid to service xp computers and
not know the above?

lastly remove all pci cards and all but one stick of ram
and one hard drive ,video card and power supply and try
again.
