I'm having a big problem with XP. I was wondering if you
can just repair XP instead of completely wiping it out and
starting all over again. Somehow, I've lost the ability to
do window updates, I can no longer do searches. The screen
just comes up blank. I've also lost my system restore, it
comes up with a blank screen. My programs seem to run ok,
it just the XP programs that are having a problem.

Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard disk, then boot the XP CD, start
Setup (do not take 'Repair' at this stage), then after the license
agreement take 'Repair Installation'. This will retain your existing
software installations and most settings. But Updates will have to be
run again, especially SP1; and if you have drivers that only arrived
with that, like USB 2 ones, you will need to update drivers for the
devices concerned. You may find that things like virtual memory
settings and some aspects of appearance have reverted to defaults

This does require that you have a 'proper' XP CD - not a recovery or
restore one that came with a new machine and which usually will only do
a complete restore to ex-factory state
