Repair/Upgrade install -- version issue

I'm attempting to replace a dodgy motherboard on my home system. This forum
has been very helpful, and I've found the instructions on how to do this in
other threads here. But it's not working for me. When I click "Install
Windows XP" running the install CD, I get a message: "Setup cannot continue
because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on
the CD." The CD has XP Pro SP1, while the computer is running with all
updates, like a good boy should. Please advise.

Are you sure your Windows XP Pro is legitimate?
It's not a Beta or other pre-release version is it?

Yes, it's legit.

I've worked on this issue since I last wrote, but I'm still having problems.
I uninstalled SP2, then performed a repair install from my original SP1 cd
as per instructions I found in the Knowledge Base. When I ran the reinstall,
there were a few files that couldn't be found, but I didn't know what else to
do, so I continued. It seemed to come up fine, running SP1. Connecting to
Windows Update to upgrade to SP2, I get an error message. I had earlier
downloaded the SP2 service pack for the slipstream, so I tried running the
update locally. It goes through the whole process, but when it reboots, I
get a dialog box "Access Denied. SP2 Setup could not complete."

Am I looking at a clean install in my near future? (Ugh)
