I have XP (home) with SP1 and SP2 loaded sequentially.

Can I run a REPAIR on my windows installation?

Are there upgrades/SP's that need to be uninstalled first?

Thank you.

Yes, provided you have a proper XP CD capable of a repair install (not a
crippled OEM restore CD), but why do you feel you need to?
Are there upgrades/SP's that need to be uninstalled first?

No. Updates and SPs will have to be added after the repair install. See
link below.
Thank you.

Steve N.

I am having problems with Norton Internet Security / System Works. It takes
between 3 and 5 minutes for the computer to boot up and you can see the
"protection center" icon flashing during that period. My thought was that
there is some problem with the XP installation that needs to be fixed.

(I've tried uninstalling / reinstalling the Norton products and that hasn't
made a difference. I've also disabled automatic update for Norton but that
hasn't helped.).

Thanks.

No, you need to slipstream your installation disc, that is if your disc says
XP Home with SP1 and you have installed SP2 your disc will no longer work.
Here is a great link that will explain everything including what to do about
it.

However your problem is NOT your XP installation it is that piece of crap
Norton.
I had the same troubles over two years ago and uninstalled Norton and
replaced it with better products, I have yet to regret it.

In your case pay attention to step #2.

I very much doubt that a Repair Install will fix your issues. You would
be better off finding out what is causing the slow startup.

1. Go through general malware troubleshooting systematically:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

2. If that doesn't fix things, do clean-boot troubleshooting:Clean boot

Clean-boot advanced troubleshooting in Windows XP -

and How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP -

3. Look in Event Viewer for clues:
Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

I'm not a fan of the Norton products and find that they do slow down
even powerful systems. However, NIS alone on a clean machine will not
slow the bootup process as much as you say yours is acting.

Hii norton eats a lot of system resources resulting in less resources
available for ur actual use. uninstall norton and use any of these top
antivirus and antispyware solutions which are best and dont effect ur os
perfomance.

http://safety.live.com (online scanner)
www.freeav.com (avera antivir)
www.windowsonecare.com (ms antivirus)
www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx (windows
defender)

Regarding ur second question about cd repair option since u have installed
sp2 u need ur cd to be of sp2 too u can use ur windows boot cd to create a
new windows sp2 cd this is called slopstreaming heres howto:

Hope this helps...,

Did the full scannow and it didn't resolve the slow bootup - Norton issue.
Perhaps there is some sort of conflict.

Norton talks about uninstalling and reinstalling with a "clean boot".

Could that make a difference?

Thanks.

All of Nortons products (ecept the corporate editions which costs $$$$$)
will cause your computer to not olny boot but run slower, that is why many
people here don't use them.

When I had system works installed my computer took 3 minutes to boot it now
takes 20 seconds, and runs much smoother. If you insist on using Norton a
uninstall/reinstall might help, yes I know you tried that already but
uninstall it again then run this tool written by Norton to remove traces of
it that the uninstall missed.

Alternatives for Norton system works
1. Anti-virus
http://www.eset.com/download/index.php

2. Firewall
http://www.simtel.net/product.download.mirrors.php?id=53687

3. Defragger (scandisk)
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1207

All other funtions of system works are not needed with XP.

Good Luck!

My non-techie approach would be to uninstall the SP2 (add/delete program from
control panel) first before reinstalling the XP w SP1. The links referred to
earlier will help. When I tried to reinstall XP without removing SP2 first,
there was a big mess. Regarding boot time, when I ran Norton, it took 63
seconds to start loading the first page on the net. The system required about
250 MB to operate. I removed Norton, and the system boots to start loading
the first page in 43 seconds and needs only about 190 MB to operate. Norton
is boggy. I replaced Norton with Computer Associates eTrust Security Suite.
Regarding starting programs, I use Windows Defender, going to tools, software
explorer, to see what runs on startup. Then Google to find out what those
programs are. You can either disable or remove the programs you don't want.
With only the eTrust and Windows Defender running (6 programs) at startup,
the boot time should be reduced. augfl
