Repair installation

Jake

I need to do a repair installation of XP Home. I'm aware that I will need
to re-download and install SP1, plus all subsequent updates. Can anyone
provide a link please, where I can download and save all these to CD? I've
searched through Microsoft's database but I seem to be going round in
circles!

Or, would I be safe from viruses by running Norton's firewall & AV, once the
repair is completed, and that way I can just run the update manager?

My reasons for the repair, incidentally, are that the computer will not
recognise any new USB devices, and the odd behaviour of some programs.

Thank you.
Jake

Hi Jake

SP1a can be downloaded from here:

"Windows XP Service Pack 1a"
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/

You can download the other Updates via the Windows Update page. Click on
'Windows
Update Catalog' and then follow the onscreen prompts.

There is a Security CD available:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp

You can download the other Security/Critical Updates that aren't on the CD
via the Windows Update page. Click on 'Windows Update Catalog' and then
follow the onscreen prompts.

Greetings Jake,

You can get the Sp1a here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/network.asp
its 125MB

You MAY want to try the SP2 RC1 also - its quite good, even if an early
version :
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/sp2preview.mspx
it has improved security, e.g. pop-up blocker.

If you have Norton's security installed before going online, you should be
ok.

First thing to do is UPDATE the Norton's,
then update Windows.

I would also suggest two common free cleaners-
AdAware, SpyBot Search and Destroy.

Q.

Thank you, Will. Is it not possible to copy them from the computer onto CD?
I see all the updates and hotfixes listed under "add/remove programs", yet
can't locate them on the hard drive.

Thanks again.

Hi

You can't backup the Updates already installed - unfortunately.

Greetings,

No,
just having it installed will not help you copy it to CD.

You need the original full install file.

Q.

Thanks, guys. One last question... do you recommend Update Roll Up 1, for
all subsequent updates since SP1? (SP1 is now SP1a, I see!)
