I have to reinstall XP pro on a laptop - it has an oem version of xp
pro and no cd that came with it. I have an XP Pro disk, but not with
an activation key that will be legit for the laptop. From what I have
found I will be prompted for a key. What do I do here?

Thanks!

You would need an OEM Pro version to use the key from the laptop, and it may
or may not work. When posting, more details are better than less. Specifying
the make and model laptop helps a lot more than just a laptop.

The laptop should have come with some means of recovery - either an
install CD, a recovery CD or a hidden partition on the hard drive with
an image of the drive as shipped. Check the documentation for what came
with the system or contact the laptop vendor's tech support.

If it came with a recovery or installation CD and it's lost you'll need
to contact the vendor for a replacement.

Another option is to find someone who has an OEM CD for that laptop
model and borrow it. As long as you have a key the CD is not unique.

Yet another option is to buy a copy of XP with a legit license and
install that. You'll need to get all the drivers from the laptop
vendor's tech support site.

On the off chance that you are able to borrow / find a XP
install CD, and you want to reinstall XP with the key that's
on the laptop already.

Not saying that the following "solution" will work for you,
since the key may not match the CD you borrow...

But there is a utility you can run on the laptop BEFORE you
erase the hard drive.

I have attached a routine to this post that will find the
existing key that is on your system.

Good luck!

Please don't post binaries to the newsgroups. Post links to the binaries.
He already has a OEM key, he wants to know how he can use it with an XP CD.
I had already answered his question, and finding a key that is probably the
OEM generic key would create confusion. See my ViewKey link on my web site
to understand when you recommend using the key finder utility.
You seriously need to sit back and learn how to post. I applaud your
enthusiasm, but you really should do what all of us did before posting help
to questions to newsgroups. Learn how to do it by reading and learning.
Posting only when you are sure your information works, or make sure you
state the consciquiences if it doesn't work. Don't post an option to clean
install as a first reply to a posters question. The poster may not even come
back to read any other replies and take yours as an official solution. You
will continue to get negative flack to your posts no matter how you explain
your rationalization. You are wrong, this is usenet, and it has worked for
many years by peers correcting the newbie until they either have no
credibility, or they get the message and learn how to actually help. You can
either learn and take the criticism in a constructive manner as it is meant
to be given, or alienate yourself and join the ranks of Andrew E and others
of the same mentality. You can be a disruptive prescience in the newsgroups
that will gain a reputation you may not want or even warrant, or one that
actually contributes. It is your choice.

This is the version of the key I warn is not compatible with SP2, it is
useless and produces a wrong key everytime it is accessed.
Please do not supply this link again.
If you want to supply a link; use the one compatible with all versions you
can access from my web page. This utility is only usefull for users that
have clean installed, repair installed/reinstalled or upgraded to a retail
or generic OEM version iof XP. Using this utility on a big box system
preinstalled computer like HP; Compaq; Toshiba; etc. will retreive a generic
install key that will not work when used for installing from any XP media.
For vendor OEM's the key is on the case
