Thanks for the link, Carey. Now, just want to check
something which might sound stupid. Okay, i have read the
link Carey sent and it says that there should be a page
offering a "repair install" option, but I have found
neither hide nor hair of it when I try to access it when I
have booted up from the XP CD. I get the usual bit about
user licence, hit F8 to confirm I accept it, then I have
to choose a partition option and then a choice of either
full or quick format or an install with keeping the files
intact. No repair to be seen. Does this mean that
something in my system won't allow a repair? Or that I
have a UK version worded and set out slightly differently
to a US version, or what? I really do need to get this
sorted out. I have lost use of my laser printer as well
as the computer, as the printer server is configured for
DHCP/BOOTP, as far as I can now work out. If I use this
option to install keeping files intact, what exactly will
I lose?

Anyone who can give me some accurate info on this? MTIA,
and sorry for being a pain.

XP REPAIR
.............................................................................

Boot from the CD or you can insert the CD while at the windows desktop but
when the setup screen appears, exit setup and reboot. If your system is set
to be able to boot from the CD, it should detect the disk and give a brief
message, during the boot up, if you wish to boot from the CD press any key.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.
