I have been told that I have to do a repair install on WinXP.
My problem is as follows:
Using a linksys WRT54G wireless router connected by wire to desktop
and wireless to laptop. My cable modem is working. The two computers
lose Internet connections some ten times a day. Restatring them brings
back the connection. Have replaced router with newer model. Have no
trouble if router is taken out of system.
Linksys says problem in computer system software. They say to do a
repair installation.
Doesn't make sense since it works for awhile and then disconnects.
Can you repair install without losing any settings, etc????
How??
Thanks,
Herb

It would be unusual for both computers to develop the same software
problem at the same time, unless it is something that is virus or
spyware related.

Make sure your antivirus software is completely up to date, with the
virus definitions not more than a week old, and do a complete virus
scan.

Also check for advertising spyware on your computer. A quick check
can be done by going to http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm

More thorough spyware checking and removal is a multi-step process.
Start with CWShredder (free) from
http://www.aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip
Then download, install, update and run AdAware (free) from
http://www.lavasoft.de
And follow that up with Spybot Search and Destroy from
http://www.safer-networking.org/ Check for updates before you run
this one as well.

Good luck

I've run CWShredder, Norton AV, Ad-aware and Spy-bot. All negative.
I understand I will have to update Win XP Home after the reinstall
repair.
But, what about all the other programs I have on this computer???
Thanks,
Herb

The repair install basically just repairs the operating systems . The
updates are part of this so they are affected. Everything else will remain
the same.Of course backuping up of important document is the prudent thing
since anything is possible . I can say that I have done a number of these
procedures and have never have a problem , but the next one I might. Jym

I must be losing it. Where do I find the repair install function?
My WinXP CD gives me upgrade or full installation. Nothing about
repair.

If you have a retail XP cd , the section that you need is in the install
portion of the cd . You will be prompted to fresh install and delete
partitions or repair present installation . Jym

Manufactures can make their restore disks and use parts of the XP utilities
that come with a retail XP disk as they see fit. Since I am not familiar
with the disk that Dell has shipped with you machine I would suggest
contacting Dell and inquire if the repair install is available on your disk
and what you would have to do to access it. Jym
