I need to repair IE6. It takes a long time to load, even to a blank page
(2.5 minutes). Windows Update does not work. When I run "rundll32
setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance" the mainenance choices are all grayed out. When
I try to boot from the install CD-ROM to repair, that is not a choice; I can
either continue the installation in progress (WRONG - it did finish) or
install WinXP. I re-installed WinXP and that made no difference.

The automatic Windows Updater shoed me what needed to be installed. It
downloaded the updates, then failed to install them. I was able to download
most of the updates using Netscape's browser. Some of them installed
normally. Some of them stalled at the point of creating a (was it a
"restore") point. But I was able to install them from Safe mode. The updates
made no difference in IE's poor performance.

The installation was an upgrade from Win2000 Pro. It seemed to work okay.
However, IE 6 is broken. Also, the system tray does not display all the
icons it should be displaying (although the programs are running).

Update: I figured out how to reinstall IE6. It re-installed, but, that made
no difference. Does not appear to be the Qhost virus (or any other virus)
since the search page is unchanged and the browser eventually goes where it
is pointed. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi CMM - Well, no guarantees on this one with those symptoms, but you can
try this:

1. Go to Start|Run and enter one line at a time (or even easier, open a DOS
box and copy the following in its entirety and then paste it into the box):

regsvr32 comcat.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Msoeacct.dll
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\Msoe.dll"
regsvr32 msjava.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 Stdole2.tlb
regsvr32 Olepro32.dll
regsvr32 Msjet40.dll
regsvr32 pdm32.dll
regsvr32 Msjtor40.dll
regsvr32 Dao360.dll

with a Return after each .dll. You'll get a message about successful
completion of the re-registration process after each one, then enter the
next (with the DOS box they'll be continuous except for the last one).

If you use Win98x and get an error on Shell32.dll, ignore it. Only the ME,
Win2k and XP versions of windows have shell32 as an object that needs
registering. (For these earlier operating systems, run "regsvr32
shdoc401.dll " instead of "regsvr32 Shell32.dll".) Depending on your
system, you may also get "not found" error messages on the last two - if so,
ignore them.

Re-start your computer when you've finished.

2. Some links to additional possible solutions are given here:
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#new_window
Also see: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281679 for certain registry
checks that can be made.

3. You can also do the following, but BE AWARE that it will reset to the
default Homepage and Search. Go to: IE/Tools/Internet Options/Programs/
and click Reset Web Settings.

Thank you

I ran the regsvr32 programs. They all worked except:
"Stdole2.tlb was loaded, but the DLLRegister Server Entry Point was not
found." Stdole2.tlb does not appear to be a .DLL or .OCX file.
pdm32.dll, msjtor40.dll, and dao360.dll were not found.

This fixed the problem with the system tray. But, IE6 is still not working
right. It is very slow to start, load pages, even open menu entries. Update
fails to initialize with error message 0x800A138F.

Any ideas?

Hi CMM - You can ignore the .tlb error - that shouldn't have been in that
particular list :) Re: your Windows Update error - Go to Windows Update,
click on "Get Help and Support", then click on "Run the Windows Update
troubleshooter to try solving issues yourself". Look at the entries related
to 0x800A138F and see if that helps. (You'll need the specific error
from your Windows Update.log). You might also get better help for this
issue in the microsoft.public.windowsupdate newsgroup if you want to try
posting there.

Thank you. I have tried looking for this error message. It appears to
usually relate to either a firewall or virus problem. But, those are not my
problems. I believe that due to the crippled IE6 the MS server just times
out while it is waiting for a response from my IE6 (as it would with a
firewall).

Some of the icons in the system tray are gone again (but the programs are
still running). The automatic updates installed. The repair tool for IE6 now
runs. But, IE6 is still crippled.

Hi CMM - At this point I would suggest that you take another look at the
Repair/Reinstall options. Be sure that you turn off as much other possible
interfering software as possible, especially any Anti-Virus that's running
and very especially disable ALL Symantec (Norton) software you may have
installed.

There is no direct Repair function for IE6 in XP. Here are some
alternatives:

1. With XP you need to go to Start|Run and type "sfc /scannow" (without the
quotes and notice the space between the c and the /.) Have your XP CD handy
and be prepared to go get a cup of coffee - it takes a while. This will do
the same thing as Repair IE6 for XP but a lot more, that is find any corrupt
system files and replace them. It does not, however, re-register the
various software components (except possibly the ones it replaces?) AFAIK.

Be aware that under certain circumstances (Win2k before SP4 - see mskb
814510, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q814510) sfc
can erroneously overwrite (restore over) previously installed files from
certain "hotfixes" which will then need to be re-installed. To check for
this, after running sfc, open a Cmd window and enter "qfecheck /v /l:c:\"
(without the quotes). If you don't have qfecheck installed, it can be
obtained for XP here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=35468 and for
Win2k, obtain qfecheck here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=35470

2. Another alternative that works on Win2k and may or may not work on XP
(but probably does - I've heard both stories), for just IE6 repair if you
don't have IE6 listed in Add-Remove Programs, then in Start|Run then enter

"rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance"

without the quotes, exactly as shown, and select the appropriate entry.

3. If you find that you need to do a re-install of IE6 then you can
consider the following, I can't verify this for XP (I'm Win2k - it works
there, and I've had good reports from XP users), but you might want to give
it a try at your own risk. Again, enter this at Start|Run without the
quotes and be careful about the spacing:

"rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
C:\windows\inf\ie.inf"

4. Lastly, here is a link to a MSKB article about re-installing IE6/OE6:

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP (Q318378)

I found that if I log off and then back on as the same user, the missing
tray icons are there. Wierd! Any ideas?
