Since downloading Service Pack 2, I can't rename a Word
document without no longer being identified by my
computer as a Word doc. How can I change this setting?
Thanx.

What *exactly* are you trying to do as your message makes no sense.

Dear Graham, If I rename a Word document my computer pops
up a message saying changing the name might make it
impossible for me to view the contents any more. When I
do change the name the File Icon for Word is gone and I
have to choose which program I want to open the file with
which it usually does reopen with Word but doesn't re-
establish the association with Word nor the Word icon. I
assume this has somehting to do with Service pack 2 since
I don't remember this happening before. Thanks. I hope
that more clearly describes my dilemma.

The file association is determined by the filename extension, which
presumably you are not displaying? It is a good idea to know what your
filenames really are and so as a first step I would suggest you switch
Windows Explorer > tools > folder options > view - not to hide extensions of
known file types.

It seems that you have changed or deleted the extension during the rename.
Quite how you achieved this I am not sure, but displaying the extension
should confirm it. rename to add .doc and you should be back in business.

This is not normal behaviour and not specifically attributable to SP2. I
have been using SP2 since before it was on general release and it doesn't do
that here.

You could try re-registering Word - see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm, though frankly I
don't think this is the problem.

.
Thanks Graham. It was the full file extension name being
displayed and I was erasing the .doc part. Thanks again.
Have a good day.
