If you type the name and don't include the proper extension,
the file will have an unknown format. What I mean is that
you should...
1. Have Windows set to show file extensions for all file
types.
2. Be careful with how you enter the new name, if you type
nename.jpg the extension will be added, but if you type
newname. with the period and no extension no extension will
be added automatically.
If you are using Windows and selecting rename and you just
overtype the highlighted name without an extension, Windows
will follow your instruction to create a file without an
extension.
I think your best option would be to get IRFanview and use
it to rename picture files.

| Thanks for your quick response. I maybe expressed myself
a bit wrong, I do know that I just can't change the file
extension. The actual problem however is that the file is
shown a jpeg format but after I rename it it has and unknown
file format.
