rename problem

Hi,

I have suddenly found that renamimg files in some Shared Folders, appears
not to work, but going up a folder then down again, shows the name has
changed. Trying to access the file (.wavs in this case) before changing
folders and back again results in being unable to play file (as I guess it
is trying to play a file using it's old name). Any reason why files are
delaying changing names?

Constant testing has shown that occasionally they change immediately, but
then go back to failing. System restore back a few days has not solved the
problem. Cannot see any folder properties different to other folders in My
Docs that do allow instant name change.

Any help appreciated.

Andrew

Kelly,

Thanks, F5 refresh works but registry change has made no difference. Tried
restarting (not needed for reg change?) but still rename works about 1 in 5
sessions.

Am intrigued by the reg change, which now shows

NONETCRAWLING REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)

Although it hasnt worked, what has using the net (whatever netcrawling is -
would love to know) got to do with renaming files?!

I did delete some 'hidden' files earlier found in:

C:\Documents and Settings\Andrew\Local Settings\Temp

as I thought all TEMP files were safe to clear up? I then did a weekly
Defrag and upon a successful ending tried to run Outlook Express which hung
(which its never done before). Hope the Hidden Temp files were not important
and caused this? OE ok after restart.

Also during the day, I had tried to run files in Temp Int Files (html and
jpegs), to access a page that had been updated during day (dispute with a
holiday price! which they altered online while I was querying price - I
stupidly didnt take a screensave before hitting IE refresh button). Take it
this isnt anything to do with NETCRAWLING?

Restarting is needed for some. As for NoNet.....this setting in many cases
causes delay. You can either change the Dword value to a 1 or simply delete
it. What is does is prevent a search for network folders and printers, etc.
Which you never mentioned as having.

That said, some shared files are indeed stored in temp files, especially if
they are part files. Also, others face the same issue with shared and/or
renaming music files:

Without knowing more about your system, try line 204:

Good luck!

Kelly,

The files in question are always put in Shared Documents, purely for
convenience. Although I do have 2 computers on a home network, and a shared
printer off one of the PCs, I use Shared Docs for large files (wavs, tifs
etc) which wont enlarge My Documents. In this way an easy weekly CD-R backup
can be made of My Docs. I can then leave recent pics etc (already backed up
to DVD) in the Shared area and not worry about the size of My Documents. (I
realise another area in say a partitioned drive would do the same thing, but
its just easy to use Shared Docs).

Thanks for your comments and link, there seems a common denominator with
music files in shared areas! Maybe I will just move them to desktop while
working on (I am converting about 50 homemade minidiscs to cd compilations
so hundreds of renamimg split wav files to do!)

Excellant website, must help a lot of people.
