Rename Album or Artist

Many of my CD's display "Unknown Artist/Unknown Album"
Why is that?

When I copy them to my hard drive it retains that
information- Unknown artist/unknown album. I can rename
the copied files but I cannot change the artist name or
album title. How do I do that?

WMP doesn't always find a match for albums.

To correct what you've already have...
Bring up the album in the media library screen. Right
click a selection/selections under artist column to edit
this field. For album, highlight all the selections and
then right click, edit selected items, enter album name.
This should do it for you.

You have an option at initial copy to do this. Select Get
Names and the choose the field to type the info.
